Index of hikes by type...

...Out & Back

Out & Back Hikes begin and end at the same place.  A hike may, or may not, encompass the entire length of a trail.  If the Hike does not include the entire trail, but goes only to a destination on the trail, then the name of the hike will include that destination.   If the hike uses more that one trail, those trail names will be in the hike description at the top of the hike map.

...Point-to-Point Hikes

Point to Point hikes begin a one point and end at another.  The hike may be on a single trail, or on multiple trails.  Further, the trails included in the hike may, or may not, be hike in full.  The additional factor added to these hikes is the issue of transportation.  How do you get to the trailhead, and how do you return from the ending point.  In this collection, Point-to-Point hikes will be defined by the starting and ending point.  Again, the trails involved will be include in the Hike Description at the top of the Trail Map.

...Loop Hikes

Loop Hikes, like Out-&-Back Hikes, begin and end at the same place.  Typically, multiple trails are involved, though some trails are developed as loop trails.  Also, some Loop Hikes begin on a trail that leads to a second trail that is the starting point of the loop.  In that case, to complete the loop, the hike will return to that starting point of the initial trail.   The first, or starting trail, is therefore an Out & Back trail that connects to the Loop Trail to the trailhead.

...Approach Trail Hikes

There are a number of hikes within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that are not accessible without first hiking another trail or trails to reach them.  They may require a significant hike on another trail (or trails) simply to get to them.  In this section I will present hikes that utilize Approach Trails, and possibly even Departure Trails.  The Approach/Departure trails will be identified in the Trail Description on the Hike Map below the name of the hike as well as in the list of trail names in the hike.  Note that these hikes may also be multi-day hikes.
